Appearance is Everything When running a home-based business, people tend to go beyond casual to sloppy. And it is no wonder why - people revel in the fact that they can "go to work" in their pajamas, and so they do! No one else might know, but what if a client unexpectedly stops by with a signed contract? Chances are, they will not think your torn jogging pants and Snoopy nightshirt are very professional. Like it or not, many people who may consider your business will make judgments based upon your appearance, especially in a competitive marketplace where your potential client can pick and choose. If you had a $5000 contract to award, would you give it to the one wearing cut-off jogging pants and a paint-stained rugby shirt, or the woman wearing a pair of neat blue jeans with a plain shirt? Based upon impressions, the first women appears sloppy and disorganized. Just based upon her appearance, there is the possibility she may not be awarded the contract, even if she is the best qualified for the job. Of course, you don't have to wear a skirt and silk blouse. Neatness is what counts. Feel free to wear your comfortable jogging suit, as long as there are no holes or bleach stains. Jeans are fine, but leave the ripped ones for housecleaning or gardening. If you do relish in the fact that you work at home and can work in your pajamas, feel free. Just make it a habit to keep a quick emergency change of clothes somewhere handy like your office. That way, if you do have an unexpected visitor, you can quickly change, and avoid the mad dash upstairs to your bedroom to try and find something decent to wear. Just remember to replace the outfit - you don't want to scramble for the cupboard with your spare clothes only to find your discarded Snoopy nightgown from the week before. |
