Protecting your Business Against a Computer Crash Everyone things that a computer crash will happen to her. But virtually every computer user will experience data loss due to a hard drive problem sometime in their life. Usually computer crashes are caused by something such as installing a new driver (for a printer or digital camera, for example) or software. The other mose common cause is from a distructive virus that somehow ended up on your hard drive (all the more reason you should have a virus protection software, such as Norton Anti-Virus) on your computer, particularly one connected to the internet.. But how can you protect yourself if you do experience a computer crash? By making sure you backup your data on a regular basis, something most people either do not do, or don't do on a regular enough basis. The simplest way to backup your files is to use a zip drive. You can quickly transfer your files using either an internal or external zip drive. You should always make sure you have a spare disk or two on hand, just in case. Many new computers come with built in CDR drives, which will copy your files onto a CD-ROM. There are two kinds of disks, a CD-R and a CD-RW. The first can only be recorded on once, while a CD-RW can be used over and over again. While the second costs more, it is the best kind of CD to use for backing up files, as the expense of using a new CD-R with every backup will quickly outweight the cost of a single CD-RW. You should also be sure to protect your computer with a power bar with a built in surge protector to protect you against erratic power supply (which can happen when the power first goes out, or when it is restored.) If you live in an area where thunderstorms are common, and you use a dial-up modem, you should also use a surge protector for your phone line. Of course, protecting your computer from a computer crash is only as good as your most recent backup. If your last backup was three months ago and your computer crashes tomorrow, ALL your work from the past three months will be lost. |
