Do
You Need a Dot-Com?
Dot-Coms are all the rage, but do you really need your very own Dot-Com, or can you get away with using a freebie site such as Tripod? The answer is quite simple are you targeting the entire web, or would your potential site only be marketed to specific people you give the address to? If the answer is the first, then you should seriously consider your very own Dot-Com to advance your business on the web. Many people look at sites on freebie domains such as Tripod as more hobby sites, or businesses that people are not serious about. It is a bias that is well known on the web. For instance, if you would like your website to be considered by Yahoo! for entry into its web listing database, you need to have a proper domain freebie domains just dont cut it for them. With your own domain name, people are more likely to remember it and easily be able to type it in when they want to visit your site. It is hard to remember some of the complicated names with slashes and tilde marks, and no one (except for yourself) will ever memorize it. You could easily memorize MyMommyBiz.com but would you be able to memorize http://members.aol.com/users/mymommybiz/index.html just as easily? No. Of course, just because you do have a business that doesnt necessarily market to the web doesnt mean that you cant have your very own domain name, especially with the low hosting fees that are available now.
