Many business owners do not know how, or simply do not have the time, to design effective promotional materials, such as business cards, flyers, brochures, etc. If you have the design skills, this can be a good business to get into. This business can also be combined with other similar businesses such as web page design or graphic design.

You will need to have the software to do this work, such as PhotoShop, as well as access to a database of copyright-free clip art for your commercial use. (For example, you cannot use Disney or Loony Tune characters, as those images are copyrighted by Disney and Warner Brothers. If you use them, you could find yourself in legal hot water).

You can also offer scanning, graphic clean-up, and image transfer services.

You can charge a rate per hour, or a flat rate by the job. The latter is most popular, especially if you are able to produce quality work quickly.

If you are good at this job, your work will speak for itself, and you should be able to get referrals, but like all businesses, you will need to market your business, as there is quite a bit of competition in this field. That said, much of the competition does not produce high quality work.
