Many people want to know more about their family history, but just don't have the time or know-how to do bit themselves. This can be a lucrative business, particularly when you go back only a few generations and can find a lot online (athough you will have to corraborate this).

You should have your client pay for any copies of birth, marriage or death certificates. Many will take a deposit for services, plus an additional "slush fund" type of balance for ordering these types of documents when needed.

There are so many ways to market this kind of business - almost everyone is curious if they have royalty somewhere in their family line, or how far back their family goes in North America. Others might want to know something more immediate - such as the names of his or her estranged great grandparents.

You should be experienced in genealogical research. If you want training, simply begin to research your own family tree. There are many great books on the subject, as well as many online resources you can view. Be sure to join a genealogical listserv for even more advice and ideas.
