There is a demand for make-up artists beyond the traditional television or movie artists. Many women are wanting fantastic make-up for weddings, gradutations, or other important life events. They want the work of a professional who can take their outfit and make their make-up work with it. You should have training in make-up to do this type of business. Your clients are expecting fabulous results, not the ho-hum everyday make-up look. Many hairdressing schools offer classes on make-up artistry covering everything from daily make-up, make-up for television, to evening make-up. They will also train you on proper storage and cleaning techniques for your make-up, and you will receive information on purchasing professional quality make-up. You will often find that the majority of your clients are members of a wedding party, or a graduate. You can easily market your services through your local bridal magazine or directory, bridal salons and hairdressers. You can also consider offering specials for entire wedding parties, where you will travel to their event to do the make-up (and possibly any last minute touch-ups.) This should also include a consultation where you meet beforehand to discuss the make-up with the bride (and her attendants, if she chooses). You should also request headshots if possible, or come equiped with your own camera to do this yourself. Check your local regulations,
as you may need to have a specific cosmetology license for this business.
