Marketing
& Advertising for Mother's Day
Mother's Day falls on the second
Sunday of May every year, and it is a booming holiday for anyone who sells
products targeting women. What can you do to get a corner of this valuable
market?
- Have a special promotion
for moms, whether it be a contest for a gift basket with splurge-type
products for moms, or a gift certificate towards an order.
- Make your own gift baskets
with products from your inventory, to entice men with those convenient
"ready to give" gifts. Don't forget the card!
- If you sell a product that
could easily be for children as well, plan a mother-daughter night as
a theme for a home party. If you sell makeup, you could do a lesson
on skincare, targeting the daughters who are just wanting to learn about
this. Or if you do gourmet goodies, focus on products that daughter's
could help make, and have some of the daughters "assist" at
different parts of the night while making the food. Mother-daughter
nights can make for great bonding time.
- If you sell online, don't
forget to put a couple promotions on your index page that targets Mother's
Day. These can make for great impuslsive lines.
- Don't forget grandmothers
too! If you have products suitable for the older generation (special
skincare, kitchen products for people with arthritis, etc), do a special
"Grandmothers Gifts" page with some suggested gifts. And then
send out reminders to your regular customers.
- Contact your customers and
ask if they would like you to send a "suggested gift list"
for your customer to any family member. Husbands can appreciate this
when they can see exactly what their wives want, and can order it directly
from you. Be sure to offer gifts or packages in several price ranges
- sometimes wives can under or over estimate what their husband will
spend on Mother's Day.
- Change your email, mailing
list and message board signatures to reflect your promotion of Mother's
Day.
- Send out a press release
about Mother's Day and tie it in to your business or products.
Don't forget to put "Order
by..." dates on your website, so people know the date that orders
need to be placed by in order to receive it in time for Mother's Day.
Mother's Day is a great holiday
to promote. You should ideally start your promotion efforts about a month
in advance, so there is plenty of time for orders to be placed and received
before Mother's Day arrives. Of course, if you plan on Mother's Day traffic
from search engines, you should start optimizing for your campaign earlier,
or consider using one of the Pay
Per Click companies to advertise.
