What Image Types Should You Use For Advertising When you are new to advertising online, and your company has given you a wide array of promotional images to use, it can be hard to know what to use and what is standard, since many companies supply their consultants or affiliates with the standard, as well as the not so standard. The most common image types used are GIF and JPG. You should be able to use both of these image types wherever you are planning to use an image online. Slightly less common, but generally compatible online is a PNG file. Some websites may refuse to accept them, but they can be converted to a GIF or JPG file with many graphics programs. SWF is also known as a Flash image file, and many websites will not accept these for advertising online. This is because a Flash file needs a special program installed on a computer before a Flash file can be used. And if a visitor doesn't have it (and they don't want to install it) the site can give warnings each time a SWF file is accessed on a page. Also, SWF files tend to be quite large, and since they can also play music, they can startle unsuspecting visitors. For the image sizes, the banner ad sized image (468x60 pixels) is the most common.
