I am a former CPA/attorney
who dabbled in direct sales before starting a family. I truly believe
that the only way for me to earn a living while raising a child
and NOT GO CRAZY trying to do both is through the direct sales industry.
That being said, I tried a couple of home party businesses and I
had a blast! I met tons of wonderful women, had some fabulous training,
went to inspirational conferences and used quality products.
One of my endeavors lasted 5 years before I realized
that I was never going to make any money at it even though I believed
in the business, the product, and the company. You see, I lack the
requisite inventory management genes and this business was extremely
inventory-driven.
I also found that I dreaded "doing parties"
because I was so stressed out beforehand: Did I bring the right
inventory with me? Did I bring all of the supplies and samples I
need for each guest? Am I going to have enough time to set up and
will it be midnight before I am out of my hostess' home? Is my presentation
polished? Am I perfectly polished? Will this be the third COMPANY
A party the guests have been to that month?
The second business I discovered was easier to
make money at, although the product wasn't something everyone was
interested in or wanted to spend money on. At least I didn't have
to carry an inventory. However, I was never passionate about the
product. There were also many other direct sales companies offering
the same products.
I had my baby girl and took a break from direct
sales for about a year. Then I got a call from a friend (also a
former attorney turned stay-at-home mom). She was so excited about
a Jockey Person to Person party she had been to several nights before
- she wanted to purchase one of everything so she said she signed
on to the business that night. I was intrigued so I quizzed her
relentlessly: I checked out every detail about Jockey Person to
Person that I could think of. First thing that struck me - NO INVENTORY!
Second thing - GROUND FLOOR OPPORTUNITY! You mean to say that I
am not competing with 5 other consultants in my neighborhood alone?
That there are no other consultants in my city? Hardly any in my
state? And then, mix in the brand name recognition of its parent
company, Jockey International... It had my attention.
