Choosing the Best Directory Categories

First and foremost, you should be choosing a category that is well suited to your site. Not only will you increase your odds of your site being accepted, but you will also gain resulting traffic from being listed in a targeted category.

If you feel a specific directory is perfect for your business, yet there really isn't a suitable category for you, many directories allow you to suggest a category you feel is better for you. Often when you submit, there will be a form field with something such as "suggest a better category". You should submit your site to the best alternative category, but request your "better category". Some directories find it is a hassle to add a new category, so you may end up being listed under your alternate category. But others love new categories because it means more pages and options for visitors in their directory.

What if there are several categories you could ideally be listed in? Be very careful before you go and submit to all six. If you check the guidelines you may find that you are only permitted one free link per site - and if you happen to first submit your site to your least favorite of the six, that category will likely be the one you find yourself listed in.

There are many different techniques for selecting one category over another. They include

• Choosing the category that is closer to the root directory (the index page of the site). For example, a link on www.example.com/business/index.html would be much more desireable than a link on www.example.com/business/homebiz/home/index.html
• Selecting the category with the fewer links. With fewer links, and thus less competition, you increase your odds of a visitor clicking through to your site. Also be wary of categories with more than 100 listings per page.
• Select the category that has the higher PageRank or WebRank. Since links with higher PR are more beneficial, this is another important way of selecting which category to list in.

Now that you know how to choose the best categories, it is now time to find the directories to submit to.
