Significant
Title Tag Problems
There are four major problems
webmasters commit when it comes to title tags. You should take care never
to fall victim to any of them, and if you are one of the offenders, you
should take steps to correct them as soon as possible.
Untitled
"Untitled" and "Untitled Document" are two of
the most common titles used on the internet today. And I am sure you can
see why having any page named "Untitled" is a bad idea. Not
only are you not benefiting anyone who happens to see your page in the
search engine results (not many will click a search result named "Untitled
Document" even if it could be the best page for their search) but
you are also losing the benefits of title text in the search engine rankings.
Same title on every page
of the site
You might want to tell the world that "JanesGraphix.com is the best
for graphic design and logos", but you don't need to proclaim that
on all 50 pages of your site (or worse, on hundreds of pages). Create
variety in your title text. Enhance your logo pages with logo specific
titles, and likewise for design work and portfolios. Even a single word
change is better than the identical title tag being used more than once.
You should never have more than one page sporting the same title tag.
Ever.
Using title tags that are
too long
40 characters is best. Anything over 70 characters is too long, and you
will find your title tags are often cut off in the search engines. Just
because you have a 150 character title tag doesn't mean you will get to
show all 150 characters in the search engine results. Instead, it will
be cut off short with a ...
Not readable
You want to have your title tags make sense, at least somewhat. "Graphic
graphics logos logo images pictures design" is not a useful title
tag for anyone seeing that. Select your keywords (whether you decide to
choose singular or plural) and go from there. Your choice can make a difference,
so time doing keyword research is well-spent.
If you are an offender of any
of these, you should take the time to make corrections. You could also
see a jump in your targeted keywords as a result, not to mention providing
better usability for your potential visitors who see your site name in
the results.
