What
is a Site Map?
A site map is a popular way
to provide helpful navigation to visitors of your site. It lays out the
structure and deeper directories and is particularly useful on sites with
multiple categories and sub-categories, and on sites with more than 1000
pages (not including message boards).
Never think of your site map
as a replacement to your regular site navigation. Not everyone will use
a site map, and many will leave discouraged if they have problems navigating
your website, and look for your competitors instead. Think of a site map
as helper, instead of the tool itself.
A sitemap is also useful for
search engines, particularly if you utilize navigation that makes it difficult
or impossible for search engines to follow, such as javascript menus and
certain kids of mouseover and rollover menus.
