The Biggest Mistake Potential Telecommuters Make You know how great it would be to telecommute to your job every day. You can save money on daycare, be there for your children, and best of all, you would get paid to stay at home all day! It would be perfect! Perfect to everyone except your boss, that is. The biggest mistake want-to-be telecommuters make is telling their boss that they want to telecommute so they can stay at home with their kids all day. Sure, it is the best part of telecommuting for you, but to your boss, they see total unproductivity coming from you. Why? The reason is simple. Bosses are only in it for the bottom line - making money. And it would be hard for you to be making money for the company when your work time is interrupted by peanut butter sandwich making, cuddle time, and impromptu field trips on your kid's insistance. When you approach your boss, your children should never enter in to the picture, especially as a selling point to telecommuting. Yes, the reason you want to stay at home is all about the kids, but to your boss, the reason should be better productivity. Your reasons should be benefits to the company, and not the benefits to you. And when it comes to your children, have a plan. Are your work hours only while your kids are in school? Be prepared to answer about child care arrangements during holidays. What if your children are toddlers? Have a plan for in-home childcare or pre-school during working hours. The worst answer would be "Oh, I plan on watching them while I am working." If this is your plan, you might as well kiss any telecommuting dreams good bye. Even if your kids are self-occupying angels, your boss will envision little terrors who will prevent you from getting any work done for the company, and will quickly reject the possibility of you telecommuting to your job. By following these simple tips, you have increased the odds of your boss saying yes to your telecommuting job. |
