Could
I Just Host My Own Site Since I Have DSL/Cable?
Many consider hosting their
own website, right on their own computers, when they have a fast internet
connection (such as DSL or cable). However, this route is definitely not
recommended, for many reasons.
First, check with your internet
service provider. The agreement you have with them may not permit you
to host your own website. In fact, some will terminate your internet access
immediately if you are caught doing this.
There is also a security issue.
You have to ensure your system is secure to prevent any hacking attempts.
Just like a website, you would
need to have your computer online 24 hours a day, seven days a week. And
if something goes weird, you do not have any technical support available
to you to fix the problem.
If you really cannot afford
to host your own website, you can sometimes find hosts that offer a small
amount of bandwidth and space for $10-20 a year. Or you could go with
a free webhost, but the free hosts will place their own ads and/or popups
onto the site.
